When the drought caused yields to decline, GES General Manager John Wynn sought a solution that could help cut costs: solar.

Founded in 2007, Golden Empire Shelling (GES) is a grower-owned, state-of-the-art facility, processing up to 70 million pounds of almonds per year. When the drought caused yields to decline, GES General Manager John Wynn sought a solution that could help cut costs: solar.

With a 1.04 MW solar system, featuring 2400 Maxeon panels tracking the sun for maximum energy production on 4.5 acres, GES was able to offset an estimated 90 percent of their electricity use during peak season, and more than cover electricity use during the off-season.

Maxeon Premier Project Spotlight: YMCA of San Diego County

The YMCA of San Diego County wanted to offset its electricity costs and increase its commitment to sustainability—while reinvesting the savings to better serve its community members.

The YMCA of San Diego County wanted to offset its electricity costs and increase its commitment to sustainability—while reinvesting the savings to better serve its community members.

Working with the team at HES, a Maxeon Preferred Partner, the YMCA chose to install the Maxeon panels across the roofs and parking lots of six branches, for a combined system size of nearly 2.5 MW.

The six solar installations are expected to provide savings of approximately $80,000 annually, which will be reinvested into programs and services for area youth and families.

California fruit producer picks solar and saves millions

California fruit producer picks solar and saves millions

Fruit grower, processor and shipper Rivermaid Trading Co. produces more than 50% of the pears in California and 8% of the state’s cherry crop. Processing such large quantities of fruit to arrive at market in peak condition requires substantial energy for fruit processing machines and cold storage. Rivermaid was looking for a way to offset electricity costs with a clean energy solution that was as sustainable as the farming operation itself.

With 4,510 Maxeon panels producing 1.47 MW of clean energy, Rivermaid is able to offset up to 60% of their electricity use during the summer months and is projected to save more than $13 million over the next 25 years. Additionally, solar augments the company’s sustainable farming strategy by bringing product to market with less reliance on fossil fuels.

Midwestern auto dealership goes solar across multiple car dealerships in Minnesota and Wisconsin

Luther Auto is the largest privately owned automotive group in the Midwest. With expanding operations, the management team made a strategic decision to offset electricity costs and enhance the community-minded company’s sustainability efforts with solar installations on several of their Minneapolis/St. Paul dealerships.

Between 2012-2017, Luther Auto installed high-efficiency solar systems on 10 new or existing dealerships, for a combined system size of 454 kW.

Taking advantage of their dealerships’ large, flat roofs, Luther Auto saves more than $45,000 in energy costs annually with solar, plus additional savings through LED lighting upgrades. Over the next 25 years, Luther Auto is expected to save an estimated $2.1 million with solar.

Maxeon solar panels deliver extreme crack resistance

Cracked cells in standard panels can occur from transport, installation, environmental stresses, and even poor manufacturing quality. Maxeon cells are reinforced by a thick plated layer of metal for added structural strength. If a crack forms, the metal backing holds the cell in place while maintaining full electrical conductivity.

Maxeon panels perform more reliably in shade

It takes just a little bit of shade to impact the power output of a solar panel. Standard solar panels typically activate bypass diodes to counter the obstruction—shutting down an entire section of the panel to mitigate heat build-up—sacrificing energy generation in the process. Maxeon panels offer greater resilience to shade, powering through small obstructions with only a slight reduction in power output.

Maxeon panels are built to power through heat and humidity

The unique design of Maxeon panels not only features an engineered encapsulant that is highly resistive to moisture, but thick, plated copper which is much more robust and able to better withstand corrosion.

A solar panel’s encapsulant plays a critical role in protecting against humidity and moisture-induced corrosion. In humid conditions, moisture can penetrate through the layers of standard solar panels, corroding the panel’s thin metallic electrical connections. The unique design of Maxeon panels not only features an engineered encapsulant that is highly resistive to moisture, but thick, plated copper which is much more robust and able to better withstand corrosion.

Maxeon panels are built to power through temperature swings

Maxeon solar panels feature thick, plated copper contacts for long-term stability. Each tab offers redundant connections with built in strain relief, to ensure a consistent flow of energy while having the flexibility to expand and contract with temperature changes.

As the ambient temperature heats and cools on a daily basis, the metallic ribbons used in standard solar cell connections expand and contract with the temperature change. This repetitive contraction and expansion causes the metal connections to degrade and break over time. Maxeon panels on the other hand feature thick, plated copper contacts for long-term stability. Each tab offers redundant connections with built in strain relief, to ensure a consistent flow of energy while having the flexibility to expand and contract with temperature changes.

Maxeon panels are significantly less likely to develop hot spots

Shaded Maxeon cells demonstrate lower heat generation, that is more evenly spread across the entire cell. As such, the diodes in Maxeon panels activate less frequently, increasing both energy production and useful life of the panel.

When an area of a standard solar panel, due to shading for example, can no longer produce enough current to match its neighboring cells, the cells begin consuming power from the surrounding cells and converting it to heat. While bypass diodes are used to prevent overheating, persistent activation can cause the diodes to fail which makes the panel susceptible to hotspot formation. Shaded Maxeon cells demonstrate lower heat generation, that is more evenly spread across the entire cell. As such, the diodes in Maxeon panels activate less frequently, increasing both energy production and useful life of the panel.
